Rose and Caledon |
Utility is generally defined as one person loving what another possess. This friendship solely revolves around material objects. Therefore, if these objects abruptly leave, this friendship will cease to exist. One obvious example of this would be Rose and Caledon's relationship in Titanic. Rose is to marry Caledon based solely on his money and not him as a person. If he were poor, Rose wouldn't be with him.
Rose and Ruth |
Pleasantness is when two people enjoy each others company and enjoy each other as individual people. An example of this would be Rose and her mother, Ruth. Naturally, they love each other, but there are occasions they don't get along as well as they would have hoped. In particular, Rose resents Ruth for making her marry a man she resents. As a person, Rose loves her mother, but she despises her decisions in relation to her life.
Rose and Jack |
A Perfect Friendship is when two people, regardless of their material possessions, get along and enjoy each others company. This friendship represents two people being together without any qualms and long-time friendships. An example of this Rose and Jack's relationship throughout the movie. The pair instantly got along, then later fell in love. Despite their cultural differences, they couldn't be without the other.
